EdG on the internship market at CMD Rotterdam

Last Thursday, Mans and Hidde were at the CMD Rotterdam internship market on behalf of EdG, and that was anything but a formal chat behind a table. We spoke to dozens of second-year students about what they really look for in an internship, and told us what we find important about interns who work with us (hint: passion for design, assertiveness and a healthy dose of stubbornness).

What we heard from students was surprisingly in line with how we see internships: as a place to develop practical skills, build self-confidence and really participate in projects that make real-life impact.

What we noticed about today's students

The course focuses strongly on research and theory, but that is why many students felt the need for more practice. They want to improve their visual design skills, learn how to deal with real stakeholders, and understand how to translate insights into a working and good-looking product.

A remarkable number of students asked about the relationship between design and research. For us, this actually works exactly the other way than at school: we believe in working pragmatically. First create, then test. No endless reports, but prototypes, sketches and iterations. And always with branding as a foundation, even in UX and UI design.

There was also a lot of interest in the type of customers we work for. Non-profits, social organizations and sustainability projects clearly drew attention. Students want to contribute to projects that have a positive impact on the world, and we fully agree with that.

Lastly

We are looking for interns who are curious, want to grow in the field and understand that UX design does not stop with a report, but goes hand in hand with how a product actually works and looks.
